Glade Schmidt

May 11, 1926 — November 8, 2020

Goltry

Glade Gene Schmidt was born to John H. and Ella Buller Schmidt on May 11, 1926, at Enid, Oklahoma.  His entire life was spent in the Goltry and Enid communities where he received his education.  He answered the final call of God and stepped over Jordan on November 8, 2020, at the age of 94.

At the age of 22, he surrendered his life to the Lord and was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, on March 20, 1949, by Minister Reuben Koehn at Goltry, Oklahoma.  Dad’s unwavering faith clear to the end enriched our lives and the lives of all that knew him.

On January 31, 1954, he was married to Arlyn Mininger at Harrison, Michigan.  After 64 years of marriage, his wife passed away.  Dad then moved into the Fairview Fellowship Home.  He much appreciated the care he received and made friends with both workers and residents, freely sharing with them the benefits and blessings of serving the Lord.

Dad was a man of prayer and turned to God with all his needs whether great or small.  He put great importance in family devotions. Even after we were all gone from home, it was the common way of ending an evening together.  This practice continued in the nursing home as long as he was able.  He would often tell us how much he appreciated us and was interested in our spiritual well-being.

His favorite, often-quoted Bible verse was, “And we know that ALL things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)  His confidence in this promise enabled him to view all of life in a most optimistic way.

All through our growing up years and beyond, we recall bicycling with dad, an activity he loved doing with his children and grandchildren.  He also planned many outings and picnics at a nearby lake for both family and friends.

After several years of being a painter, Dad became a life-long storm shelter builder, an occupation he thoroughly enjoyed and stayed interested in long after retirement.

Besides being a youth leader and Sunday School teacher for many years, Dad is probably most remembered for his avid love for tract work.  Handing out tracts to his customers, health care providers, and associates was an integral part of his life.  He was an active local “missionary” in his home community, talking to many people and encouraging them to serve the Lord.

While he leaves no earthly treasures behind, he has left us with the assurance of riches untold in the heavenly realm.

Left to cherish his memories are four children, Susan and Eugene Schultz of Fredonia, Kansas,  Judy and Sylvanus Peachey of Belleville, Pennsylvania, Randy and Grace Schmidt, and Troy and Valerie Schmidt,  both from Goltry; a special part of the family, Earle Decker;  eight grandchildren, Nicole and Jason Schneider and their two children, Jackson and Andrea, Jennifer and Kurt Holdeman, Jill and Alex Smith and daughter, Valentina, Amber and Jake Hershberger, Lori Peachey, Shane and Kate Schmidt, Janae Schmidt, Joel and Danielle Schmidt;  one sister, Verla Johnson; in-laws, Ellen and Carl Kuepfer, Carol and Albert Koehn, Richard and Twila Mininger, Newell and Jane Mininger.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlyn; first-born daughter, Starla; infant daughter, Ruth; three sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law, and his parents.
