Virginia Dixon

Graveside service for Virginia L. Dixon will be Friday, October 20, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. at Riverview Cemetery with Pastor Ken Bowden officiating. Viewing will be Thursday 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and Friday 9:30 a.m. until 12:00 noon.

Virginia Lee Dixon was born September 22, 1937 to Maggie (Pettay) Hunt and Clark Hunt at the Hardtner Hospital. She grew up in Kiowa and started waitressing at her mother’s cafe. She quit school in the 8th grade. She later told her great grandkids that she got kicked out because she had gotten too smart. She continued to work at cafés and was employed at Mabel’s café when she met her husband, Jerry “Tex” Dixon. They were joined in marriage on August 12, 1953 in New Mexico. They had one child, a daughter, Jerry Lee (Dixon) McNeal.

Virginia always loved cooking and enjoyed making big dinners for her family and trying out a new recipe from one of her many cookbooks. She loved plants and gardening and often made homemade jellies and would can the fruits and vegetables that she picked.

Virginia also loved going to auctions and garage sales to see what treasures she could find and who she would bump into to chat and reminisce with. She was an avid collector of unusual salt and pepper shakers and could tell you a story about every pain she had. She would often get together with her cousins and aunts to play cards and visit. She loved just going to town and visiting with the many friends that she would bump into.

Virginia was a very tough woman who struggled with numerous health issues over the years. She had several heart bypasses and fought thyroid cancer in 2003. After undergoing chemo treatment she beat her cancer. She lost her husband, “Tex” in 2008 and remained a strong support system for her family. She became diabetic and battled kidney disease until she just couldn’t fight anymore. She became very ill on August 5, 2017 and was admitted to the Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita. After a pacemaker and an unsuccessful attempt at dialysis she just wanted to come home and was transferred to the Kiowa District Hospital on September 5, 2017 where she could enjoy her friends and family. Virginia finally lost her battle on October 18, 2017. To sum it up she was a lovely lady to have known.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Dixon; her parents, Clark and Maggie Hunt; her brother, Bud Hunt.

Those who survive are her daughter, Jerry McNeal; two grandchildren, Joy Little and Aaron Bridwell and Jeremy McNeal and wife, Elonna; four great-grandchildren, Karlissa Little, Lexus Bridwell, Caylee Bridwell and Dakota Salazar and nephew, Darrell Hunt.

Memorials may be made to National Kidney Foundation or American Diabetes Association through the funeral home.
