Ames-Graveside service for Roy Raymond “Rusty” Munkres will be Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at Ames Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. Viewing will be Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Okeene.

Rusty was born January 27, 1915 to James Munkres and Mertie Mason Munkres. He passed from this life on February 24, 2017. He was born and raised four miles north of Ames on the farm his father staked in the land run of 1893. He attended school at Forest Home School. He married Louise Mallory, and they lived on the farm southeast of Ames, where they farmed and raised cattle. They were married for 65 years until her death in 2003.

Rusty was drafted into the U.S. Navy and served in WWII on board the U.S.S. Gosper (APA-170). They participated in the Okinawa invasion among other tasks during and after the war. He was then honorably discharged with the rank of Seaman First Class. During the war, a son, Raymond Dale was born.

After the war it was back to the farm. Also there was much hunting and fishing to do with friends and family. Later, another son, John Mark was born.

Rusty was a fine musician and he played with his brother for many dances in his younger years. In the late 60’s he started playing again and played for dances and jam sessions for many years.

The locals marveled at how Rusty was able to recall people, places, and names from the past as well as local history.

Rusty was preceded in death by his wife, Louise; son, Raymond; his mother and father; five brothers and four sisters.

Survivors include his son, Mark and wife, Jan of Ames; daughter-in-law, Lou Anna Munkres of Midwest City; grandchildren, James Munkres of Norman, Anne Munkres of San Antonio, Texas, John Munkres of Del City and Kelley Munkres of Enid; four great grandchildren; step grandchildren, Brad Brown of DeFuniak Springs, Florida and Shasta Brown of Ames.
