Mary Spragins

Mary Ann (Spaeth) Spragins was born February 1, 1944, in Watonga, Oklahoma. Mary Ann passed away on August 9, 2015, in Edmond, Oklahoma, surrounded by her loving family.

Mary Ann was the fourth of six children born to Anton (Tony) and Esther (Nault) Spaeth. She was raised on the family farm outside of Hitchcock, Oklahoma, and graduated from Watonga High School. She attended and graduated from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, Oklahoma and went on to obtain a Masters Degree of Social Work from the University of Oklahoma. Over her forty-year career in social work, she worked in multiple areas, but most enjoyed working with children. Later in her career, she also provided social work services to hospice patients. Mary Ann touched countless lives through her dedicated and tireless work in the field.

Mary Ann married Daryl Spragins, of Guymon, OK, on May 23, 1971, and thereafter established residence in Galveston, Texas. Two daughters, Stephanie and Jennifer, were born in 1974 and 1977, respectively to Mary Ann and Daryl. In April of 1983, Daryl passed away and approximately four years later, Mary Ann and her daughters moved back to the family farm in Hitchcock, Oklahoma to help care for Mary Ann's mother. She and her daughters resided in the Hitchcock and Okeene area until 1996, when Mary Ann moved to Weatherford, Oklahoma to assist her daughter Jennifer. In 2000, Mary Ann relocated to Edmond and resided there until 2008, when she moved to Cave Creek, Arizona to live with her daughter Jennifer and family. She remained in Arizona until May of this year, at which time she moved back to Edmond to be reunited with both of her daughters and their families.

Mary Ann was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in October of 2005. Over her ten-year battle with this disease, she underwent a number of treatment modalities, including a stem cell transplant and a near continuous regimen of chemotherapies and radiation. Despite the severity of her condition and the numerous side effects she experienced from these treatments, she never complained and instead continued to work for several years thereafter. She also remained a constant and positive presence in her daughters' lives, where she enjoyed helping her grandchildren everyday. Mary Ann enjoyed being with her family as well as caring for her beloved dogs, Bubba and Skipper. She had numerous hobbies, including crochet, needlework, quilting, word search and reading. She was Catholic and enjoyed attending mass.

Mary Ann is preceded in death by her husband, Daryl, her brother Donald (Mike) Spaeth, and her parents Tony and Esther Spaeth. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Stephanie (Spragins) and Joel Burns and Jennifer (Spragins) and Matt Harris, all of Edmond, as well as seven grandchildren, Abigail Spragins, Evan Burns, Olivia Burns, Carter Harris, Owen Burns, Isaac Burns, and Alex Burns. She is also survived by her sister, Helen and the late Milford Unruh, of Enid, Oklahoma, as well as her brothers Tony (Bud) and the late Johanna Spaeth, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, John and Shirley Spaeth, of Hitchcock, Oklahoma, and Kenneth and Ruth Spaeth, of Okeene, Oklahoma. Also surviving are numerous other relatives and friends.

Rosary for Mary Ann will be Thursday, August 13, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. and funeral mass will be at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Okeene led by Rev. Aaron Foshee. Burial will be at Cottonwood Cemetery near Hitchcock with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Okeene. Viewing will be Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. with the family present from 4:00 until 6:00 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a tax-deductible donation be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) and mailed to 9272 Bergamo Blvd, Edmond, OK, 73034. LLS provided priceless support to Mary Ann and her family during her cancer battle.
