Marilyn Hungerford

May 3, 1928 — December 4, 2018

Helena

Marilyn Stookey was born May 3, 1928 to parents, Roll and Bertha Stookey, in their home at Carwile, Oklahoma. Marilyn grew up on the Stookey farm with her sisters, Lorenna, Dortha and her brother, R.J.

Marilyn went to high school at Helena, Oklahoma, graduating in 1946. Marilyn then attended Oklahoma A&M (Oklahoma State) University, where she found a life passion to pursue a dream of teaching.  Marilyn also loved music which inspired her to join the Cowboy Marching Band, where she played the saxophone. Marilyn completed her honor, earning a degree in Elementary Education in 1950.

During this time period, Marilyn married her high school sweetheart, Ken Allen Hungerford of Helena. Ken and Marilyn were married in the Helena Christian Church on December 27, 1949.

Soon after, Marilyn and Ken moved to the Wichita, Kansas area. It was here that Marilyn began her teaching career, taking a position at Stanley Elementary School.

Life eventually brought them back to Oklahoma, however, and Marilyn and Ken returned to the Helena area. Here they became involved in the farming and oil and gas business.

Marilyn and Ken had seven children Kim, Kip, twins, Chris and Craig, Kirk, Candace and Colette.

Marilyn spent a lifetime in Helena raising her children, substituting at the local school, and she was always more than willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Marilyn had a heart of gold and was one of the most caring souls you would ever meet.

Marilyn loved to spend time in her massive beautiful garden, and she enjoyed recruiting her kids and grandkids to help pick and snap all the green beans that she would grow. When she wasn’t in the garden, Marilyn loved swimming in her cherished pool, which Ken designed and branded her initials in the wall especially for her. Marilyn also enjoyed and spent many hours rocking and reading to her grandkids, which earned her the nickname “rocking granny.”

Marilyn could always be found at her children’s sporting events and that carried on to following her grandkids’ games as much as possible.

Marilyn was a member of the local Jr Homemakers Club and always talked about the good times filled with fellowship and putting together those birthday calendars that everyone enjoyed.

Marilyn was also a long time member of the First Christian Church in Helena, and she was involved in many activities there, including singing in the choir and playing the piano. One of those specific activities she loved was cooking and preparing outstanding food. Marilyn knew how to feed a large amount of people and did so with perfection time after time.

If you knew Marilyn at all, you knew not to say any discouraging words about her beloved Oklahoma State Cowboy teams. Marilyn loved going to all the football games and did so for many years. Marilyn and Ken traveled across the country attending Cowboy games and always knew everything there was to know about the teams.

Marilyn finished her time on earth December 4, 2018 at the age of 90 years. Marilyn is no doubt enjoying her reunion with Ken, Kim, Chris and Candace.

Marilyn is survived by her sister, Dortha Dunkin of Panama City, Florida; brother, R.J. Stookey and wife, Juliette of Helena, Montana; daughter, Colette McBride and husband, Marty of Stillwater; son, Craig Hungerford and Deb Adams of Wichita Falls, Texas; son, Kirk Hungerford of Helena; son, Kip Hungerford and wife, Rhonda of Helena; grandchildren, Kyle and Kory Hungerford of Larkspur, Colorado, Jennifer and Kasey Hungerford of California, Brittany McBride Johnson and husband, Van of Balko, Bethany McBride Lanie and husband, Trent of Wakita, Bailey McBride of Moore, Caleb McBride of Stillwater; great grandchildren, Zoey Len McBride, Zayden Lanie, Hattie Lanie, Kristyn Packard, Chloe Hungerford and one great, great grandchild, Kourtlyn Lane.
