Doris Doris

December 31, 1969 — December 31, 1969

ANTHONY-Doris Ernestine Ames was born March 19, 1916, one of 12 children to be born in Oklahoma to Lyman and Mable “Sweetie” Wolgamott. She attended Northwestern College in Alva for two years. There, she met the love of her life, Clifford “Pack” Packard. They married, July 18, 1937. Their son, Jerry Max, was born June 17, 1942. They lived in various places as Pack was a school teacher but Doris always called the “river farm” south of Cherokee ‘home’. They called that home until Pack passed away May 17, 1961.

Doris returned to college where she completed her degree in education. Her only teaching job would be first grade at Arkansas Avenue Elementary School in Wichita, Kansas. Floyd Ames caught her attention while she had attended college. They married December 20, 1964, during her first year of teaching. They moved back to and lived happily for many years on Floyd’s farm just north of Amorita, Oklahoma where they farmed and raised registered Dorset sheep. Floyd passed away March 13, 1970.

Doris continued her life on the Amorita farm until she moved to Anthony in 1977 to take care of her injured son. Doris continued to enjoy playing bridge, visiting and caring for her many brothers, sisters, and staying in touch with their families. Doris also committed her life to visiting and caring for her son until his death May 5, 2010. Doris had moved to Sedgwick, Kansas to be closer to family. Doris passed away Friday, September 20, 2013 at the Homestead of Halstead surrounded by family.

Doris is survived by her grandson; Clifford and wife, Tina, and their children Max (Randi), and Alexandra Packard; granddaughter, Dawn and husband, John Clark and their daughters, Taylor, Lauren, Emma and Shelby; and numerous nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved.

She was preceded in death by her parents, eight brothers; Wayne, Willis “Bill”, Wilfred “Grassy”, Francis “Dutch”, Clifford, Kenneth “Shorty”, Don and George; three sisters Ruth Stranathan, Virginia Alder and Marylee Houston.

Funeral service will be Saturday, September 28, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. the Hardtner Methodist Church, Hardtner, Kansas. Burial will follow at the Hardtner-Elwood Cemetery.

Viewing will be at the church before the service.
