Donald Metcalf

Another member of "The Greatest Generation" has left us. Donald E Metcalf, 91, of Jet, Oklahoma, passed peacefully at home on November 17, 2016.

He was born at the family farmhouse December 17, 1924 to Emery Lemuel Metcalf and Jessie Emily (Lemmon) Metcalf. His grandmother and teenage father established the family farm as part of the 1893 Oklahoma Cherokee Outlet land run, living in a dugout the first winter of 1893.

Donald attended Jet High School, where he was involved in 11 man football, and graduated in 1943. In 1944, at the age of 20, he enlisted in the Marines. He served in Guam, Okinawa and mainland China. He safely returned as private first class auto rifleman sharp shooter USMC to Jet in 1946 and resumed working on the farm.

Donald was a deacon, elder, and chairman of the Board at the First Christian Church of Jet and a member in the Jet Masons.

On June 27, 1947, he married Florence Audrey Harris. They entered 69 years together of farming and ranching. He was a tireless provider for his family and an extraordinary paternal Christian example for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Donald was preceded in death by his father, mother, brother, Earl Metcalf and wife Francis, brother, Dale Metcalf and wife, Mabel , brother, Ivan Metcalf and wife, Florine, brother E.L. Metcalf, sister, Jessie Mary Reinhart and husband, Cecil.

Donald is survived by his wife, Florence; sister-in-law, Betty Metcalf; two children, Darell Metcalf and wife, Kellie and Donita Lindley and husband, Bruce. He also has seven grandchildren, Danece Smith and husband, Jacob, Dusty Metcalf and fiance, Lauren Garrison, Dia Metcalf, Austin Lindley, Ivory Myers and husband, Jeremy, Katie Maxwell and Griffin Maxwell. Late in life he was blessed with six great-grandchildren, Dayne McBroom, Kyndal and Karter Smith, Ethan Maxwell, Sophia and Penelope Myers.

Funeral service for Donald Metcalf, 91, will be Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Jet United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Timberlake Cemetery. Viewing will be Monday from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Lanman Funeral Home in Cherokee.
