Don Merle Provost

Don was born on October 23, 1924 to Merle and Rose Provost.  He died on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at the Commons Assisted Living Center in Enid.  Don graduated from Lambert High School in 1942 and attended Oklahoma State University before signing up for the U.S. Navy.  He served from February 1943 to November 1945.  He was assigned to the destroyer U.S.S. Clarence K. Bronson.  One of the biggest claims to fame of the ship was when they came to the rescue of a man who would later become President of the United States, George H. W. Bush.   Don married his high school sweetheart, Twyla White on May 1, 1945.  They moved to a farm west of Cherokee in 1950.  Don worked for AEC as a lineman and as a bookkeeper for Shoeb Ranch.  He also farmed, ran cattle and raised registered Dorsett Sheep.  In his younger years he loved working with the Cherokee Round-up Club and participated in many rodeos as a bulldogger.  He was an active member and elder of First Christian Church in Cherokee.  He was a member of the American Legion for 70 years.  In 2011 he and Twyla moved to the Commons.  They celebrated their 67th anniversary in 2012.  After moving to Enid, they joined Central Christian Church and attended the Sooner Sunday School Class.  Don loved watching Oklahoma State University athletics, Thunder basketball and the Dallas Cowboys.  He was a patriotic man who loved his country.  One of his proudest moments was when he was chosen as the parade marshal of the Great Salt Plains Rodeo.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, Twyla; his parents; his son, 1st Lieutenant Jerry Provost and his grandson, Colonel Travis Provost.

He is survived by his sisters, Virginia Arnot and Jean Wheeler; his daughter, LaDonna Groves and husband, Roger; daughter-in-law, Linda (Provost) Hasselwood and husband, Bill; grandchildren, Rebecca Provost, Travis Groves, Sarah Marchetti, Scott, Brian and Jeremy Hasselwood; great grandchildren, Hannah and Jake Provost, Wyatt Groves; many nieces; nephews and friends.

Memorials may be given to Cherokee First Christian Church, Central Christian Church Caregivers or Enid Hospice Circle of Love through the funeral home.
