May 19, 1930 — December 4, 2025

Kiowa

Alyce LaVaun (Miller) Ferrell went to take the hand of her Lord on Thursday December 4, 2025, at the Kiowa District Hospital. Alyce was born on May 16, 1930, in Laramie, Wyoming to Vern and Velma (Orton) Miller. She grew up in Laramie, Wyoming. Alyce would often ride the train from Laramie to Burlington, Oklahoma with her family to visit the Driftwood, Oklahoma area where her parents were originally from.

Alyce moved with her family to Driftwood when she was 16 years old and attended Driftwood High School. She always said the biggest adjustment to the move was going from a class size of 400 in Laramie to a class size of 5 in Driftwood, and of the 5 students in her graduation class she was related to all but one.

Alyce met Tommy Ferrell, riding the bus to school. Tommy saved the seat next to him for Alyce but she didn’t know this and sat elsewhere; this initial rejection did not deter Tommy’s persistence. Tommy and Alyce were married September 18, 1949 in Driftwood, Alfalfa County, Oklahoma by M. E. Beene, Methodist Church Minister. Tommy and Alyce were married nearly 69 years before his death on August 21, 2018. Tommy and Alyce established Kiowa as their home in 1950. They have two daughters, Vickie and Beckie.

Alyce worked at Mabel’s café in the 1950s and the Sweet Shop in the 1960s as a waitress, she worked at Parker’s Grocery Store as a checker in the 1970s and then Hometown Market where she worked as the bookkeeper until her retirement in 2007 at the age of 77. She always set an example to her family to work hard, be trustworthy, and treat people nice.

Alyce was a member of the Community Congregational Church and a member of the Pilgrim Daughters.

Alyce was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Tommy; her parents Vern and Velma Miller; her ‘parents-in-laws’, Leon and Maude Ferrell; sister, Alta Michaelis; brother, Donald Miller and infant son, Vernon Leon Ferrell.

Alyce is survived by her two daughters, Vickie Snapp and husband, John, Beckie Miller and husband, Ron; granddaughters, Melissa Edwards and husband, Jeremy, Julie Hicks and husband, Darren; great-grandchildren, Madison, Mason, Miles Edwards, and Avery and Ally Hicks all of Wichita; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Benny and Adele Ferrell of Wichita, Kansas, and numerous nephews and nieces.

Alyce was a wonderful wife, mom, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend. Her love of family and friends, baking pies for her family and friends in the Kiowa community, and serving her church was first and foremost in her life. Her sweet smile, infectious laughter, and strong sense of decency will always be remembered by those who knew her.

Vickie and Beckie would like to thank the staff at the Kiowa District Hospital in Kiowa, KS for the care they provided to Alyce during her extended stay.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at 1:00 p.m at the Community Congregational Church of Kiowa with viewing before the service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the Riverview Cemetery in Kiowa, KS.
