Obituary

Funeral service for Burton G. Smith will be Thursday, March 16, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the Apostolic Christian Church in Kiowa.  Visitation will be Tuesday, March 14, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Wednesday, March 15, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with family present from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Kiowa.  www.lanmanmemorials.com  Facebook:  Lanman Funeral Home Inc.

Burton G. Smith, son of the late George Smith and Shirley De Grange Smith, was born February 4, 1948 at Alva General Hospital. He passed away at the age of seventy-five years one month and seven days. Burton grew up on a farm in Harper County, Kansas. He graduated from Hazelton High School in 1966 as a Valedictorian. Burton then started college at Kansas State University and later transferred to Northwestern Oklahoma State University. He graduated with a bachelor’s in Sociology/Psychology and a minor in Mathematics in 1971.

Burton was united in marriage in 1971 to Jeannie Riggins of Alva, Oklahoma. From this union two children were born, a daughter, Misty Adair and a son, Shane Smith, both of Alva, Oklahoma.  Burton moved his family to Wichita, Kansas to work for the state of Kansas as a social worker. He later relocated to Pratt, Kansas for a few years for social work for the state. He advanced to social service supervisor of 12 counties for several more years. Sometime later, Burton returned to Alva and worked for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline. He worked with Panhandle throughout the Midwest and later moved back home to Kiowa, Kansas to assist in managing the family farm.

On July 28, 2000, he was united in marriage to Jan Murrow, his high school sweetheart. Through this union, Burton gained a son, Robert Willson, and a daughter, Sandra Birzer.

Burton is preceded in death by his parents, George and Shirley Smith; one brother, Michael, and two granddaughters, Michelle and Mikiah Crouch.

Burton is survived by his wife, Jan Smith of Kiowa, Kansas; daughter, Misty Adair and husband, Pat; son, Shane Smith and wife, Alicia, all of Alva, Oklahoma; son, Robert Willson and wife, Nancy of Keller, Texas and daughter, Sandra Birzer and husband, Jeremy of Wichita, Kansas. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, Wyatt Crouch and fiancé, Brittany Cunningham, Bridgitte and Weston Crouch, Austin Adair, Trinady and Olivia Smith, Brennan and Karsen Birzer, Gabriella and Lucas Willson,; one great granddaughter, Josie Crouch; four siblings which includes brother, Spencer Smith and wife, Mary of Kiowa, Kansas, Doug Smith of Anthony, Kansas and sister, Sheila Mullenix and husband, Michael of Seymour, Indiana;  sister, Cheryl Ransom and husband, Doug of Wakita, in addition to many nephews, nieces, other relatives, friends and his beloved dog Sadie Mae.

Memorials may be made to the Apostolic Christian Church or Byron-Amorita Cemetery through the funeral home.
